Manchester City Council has unveiled its major plans to to upgrade the city’s central Piccadilly Gardens. The public space is set to be improved through a two phase project, equating to a multi-million investment.
Plans include the addition of grass and flowers, to make the space more ‘colourful, vibrant and inviting’, in addition to improved CCTV, more lighting, an events space and children’s playground. The project is expected to be worth in the early tens of millions.
The council released a set of artist impressions created by architects LDA Designs, showing the space as a popular sociable area for people to come together.
Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “Piccadilly Gardens plays a vital role in connecting people across our city region, with hundreds of thousands of journeys made in and around there every single week. We are working closely with the Council to significantly improve facilities for Bee Network passengers by creating a more accessible, modern and welcoming interchange in the heart of the city centre.”
